William J. Garvey
My parents are Bill and Mary Garvey from Port Austin, Michigan.
I learned from my dad that I can do anything!
From my Mom I learned to always do my best! (Good, Better, Best, never let it rest, till your good is better and your better is best!)
I love a lot of things in life, most of all my wife and my kids.
I love my job, I work as a Gas Service Supervisor at Consumers Energy. The people I work with are pretty awesome! They do everything from helping people get gas to their homes, to responding to hit gas lines, making everyone safe.
I work closely with many of the local police and fire departments responding to the emergencies that come up and have a deep respect for all of them!
I have many hobbies.
I love to restore cars (my son Will and I are restoring a 1984 jeep from the ground up).
I love to build things, my wife Lorraine and I are always working to improve our house, which we built together (and are still married)!
I love to take pictures and try to tell a story with each one!
I love to write, although I wish I had taken classes on writing and I admit I am not as good as I would like to be, but it isn't because I didn't try my best! (Thanks Mom!)
I have a passion for farming, I have grown so many things. I live on 2 acres of land, and have half of that in gardens. We have raised Cows, Sheep, Chickens, Turkeys (only a few at a time) and almost everything you would want to eat from a garden.
Last of all I love growing Giant Pumpkins, I started growing them 15 years ago. We won the Michigan State Fair many times for the biggest pumpkin and even set the record for the biggest pumpkin grow in Michigan. I once started a business called Garvey's Gardens. I had a card that said "The Pumpkin Man" and we shipped giant pumpkins all over the United States.
I no longer compete as hard as I once did. The world changed and I think it is better to think more about my family.
I still believe you are only as good as others think you are, and if you don't follow your dreams you will never change your world.
On 9-11-01 my world changed again. So many people hurt, so bad!
I didn't know what to do! I heard President Bush tell us to do what ever we could do best to help all of us feel better. The best things I knew how to do wouldn't help anyone! The more I thought of it, the more I thought I had to do something! Then one day I woke up and knew what I was going to do, I have seen the smiles of many children looking at, climbing on and enjoying my giant pumpkins. I had heard that as many as 10,000 kids lost either one or both of their parents on that day. My job or mission was to make them smile. I took the best pumpkin I grew to New York and one of the things that one of the New York City Policemen told me as they checked my truck, was you should have a license plate that says, "Pumpkin Man"! I smiled and said, "Thanks, I once was that, and I guess I am again today!"
